Resources for Military Families

Being a military kid is a unique experience! Although there aren’t as many books on the market that are explicitly about military kids as I would like to see, some recommendations by age:

Board Books (0-3)

Mini Military series by RP Kids, Illustrated by Lisa Engler

Good Morning Military Books by Sarah Murphy and Amy Dobbins

Picture Books (4-8)

Papa’s Home by David Soman

Night Catch by Brenda Ehrmantraut, Illustrated by Vicki Wehrman

Little Duck’s Moving Day by Stephanie Calmenson

For young kids, Sesame Street for Military Families is an invaluable resource. Families and caregivers can search for specific topics, like relocation, TDY, deployments and more.

My personal favorite video addresses reconnecting with family members who have been deployed: while most work focuses on the joys of homecoming, this video acknowledges that the readjustment can be hard!

Middle Grade (8-12)

The Total Eclipse of Nestor Lopez by Adrianna Cuevas

As Brave As You by Jason Reynolds

Bloomability by Sharon Creech (while this book doesn’t explicitly mention the military, it’s a solid fish out of water story for kids who feel that way!)

Young Adult (14+)

Uncertain Ground: Citizenship In An Age of Endless, Invisible War by Phil Klay

Dear Military Teen by Shanon Hyde

Beneath Wandering Stars by Ashlee Cowles
